Cloud coverage rises while hype falls

30 July, 2010, London: Media coverage of cloud computing jumped by 18 per cent in the quarter to June, according to the latest Cloud Report from Apollo Research. Once again cloud increased its share of all technology stories in the US and Europe.

The research shows that references to the subject being hyped are now falling, while stories on deployment of cloud solutions are sharply up http://bit.ly/c3g4uK.

"The results are consistent with the number of companies trying to build their profile within the cloud space," said Will Arnold, director at Apollo. "Well over 250 companies are active and successfully generating stories."

Led by Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple and Vmware, the ranking of top companies within cloud also reveals the scale and complexity of the competitive landscape. The table shows software companies, search engines, telcos, IT services and outsourcing companies, infrastructure and hosting vendors, as well as a raft of cloud specialists.

‘It would have taken a very prescient forecaster to have seen Amazon and EMC in competition a few years ago,' commented Arnold.

Apollo's Cloud Report reveals:

  • The top 200 companies by media presence

  • Who's winning in the private and public cloud space

  • The reasons the media give for cloud adoption

  • The perceived barriers to adoption

  • What makes a successful story in the top tier media

  • Where cloud is on the media's agenda

  • The countries taking cloud most seriously

  • Who the key influencers are
