Liquavista launches 8.5" color and mono display

Liquavista product range demonstrates scalability to larger sized displays

25 May 2010 – Liquavista BV, today announced the latest development in its range of LCD2.0 electrowetting products.  The demonstration of a full color and monochrome 8.5” display, available across the entire range of current technology platforms, LiquavistaBright, LiquavistaColor and LiquavistaVivid, proves consumers can now enjoy all the benefits of Liquavista’s technology across all sizes and applications.

“By increasing the size of our displays further, we once again prove the scalability of our technology to larger screen formats, supporting our view that electrowetting technology can be seen as LCD 2.0.” said Guy Demuynck, Liquavista CEO. “Larger displays which offer video capabilities and the lowest possible power will enable full interactivity while opening the door for new applications far beyond our entry market in eReaders.”

“Demonstrating unlimited scalability of our technology is at the fore-front of our strategy as a business, and coupled to the direct compatibility of our manufacturing processes to existing LCD infrastructures, clearly supports our branding of LCD2.0.” added Anthony Slack, VP Business Development.  “This will enable Liquavista and its partners to deliver all of the versatility and benefits of scale possible with LCD, but with the remarkable improvements in all aspects of performance that are possible with our technology!”

“The eReader market place is an important entry point for Liquavista.  However, the 8.5” display shows not only where our technology can take this exciting new category of devices, but how Liquavista technology has the potential to revolutionise all segments of consumer electronics in the future.” said Johan Feenstra, Liquavista’s CTO “Our latest large area displays bring XGA resolution (1024 x 768), which combined with video capabilities will fuel further breakthroughs in the delivery of content and applications to eReaders, and more.  The scalability of technology, combined with its unique performance make it ideally suited to cover all existing applications, from mobile phones up to very large size TV’s.”

“Combined with our System Development Kits, the new 8.5” displays will help our partners develop new product concepts which include all the benefits of our electrowetting technology.” added Guy,  “It will also further drive innovation surrounding next generation products that deliver enhanced consumer benefits and offer a much greener alternative as well as a true mobile experience.”

Available to partners for evaluation through our Liquavista’s partner programme, manufacturers and product developers will be able to gain early access to samples. The displays form part of our system development kit program, which will offer a choice of either a 6” or 8.5” electrowetting display, driving circuitry, a choice of either TI OMAP or Freescale i.MX51 mobile application processor host platform as well as a Linux based operating system.   The partner programme membership and SDK’s are all designed to help customers drive their concept development projects and enable new product innovation.

To see Liquavista’s 8.5” displays for the first time, visit us at SID2010 this year on Liquavista’s stand 405, in Seattle Washington, from the 25 to the 27 May.

About Liquavista – www.liquavista.com
Liquavista offers a new type of electronic display technology that will change the way we interact with all consumer electronics devices, including mobile phones, media players, and electronic readers. Liquavista’s displays create bright and colorful images that ensure excellent indoor and outdoor readability and use dramatically less battery power.  Users can engage with their favorite applications for much longer before a recharge is necessary and battery sizes can be reduced allowing devices to be thinner and lighter.

The company’s ultimate vision is to build on the extraordinary optical performance and unique power efficiency of its technology to lead a green revolution in displays for notebook PCs, desktop monitors and televisions that use less than one-tenth of the power of current devices.

Liquavista’s electrowetting display technology has been developed to be directly compatible with existing display manufacturing techniques and processes.  Called LCD 2.0, partners can quickly re-use their manufacturing assets to manufacture displays based upon Liquavista’s technology and bring exciting, highly differentiated products to consumers with both enhanced usability and performance.

Liquavista has developed three technology platforms (LiquavistaBright™, LiquavistaColor™ and LiquavistaVivid™) based on electrowetting display technology initially for use in eReaders, mobile phones, media players, and other mobile devices.  In the future Liquavista will develop and market further technology platforms, which will support future generations of all consumer electronic products, including mobile through to advanced TV and computing devices.

Liquavista was founded in 2006 as a spin-off from the world famous Philips Research Labs in Eindhoven. The company is backed by Amadeus Capital Partners, Gimv, Applied Materials and Prime Technology Ventures. It is headquartered in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
