FHM Names Cheryl Cole World’s Sexiest Woman 2009

FHM, The UK’s biggest men’s magazine, is pleased to announce home-grown superstar Cheryl Cole is the winner of FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the world 2009 poll. The Girls Aloud and X Factor star left band mates standing as she flew into the top spot, knocking last years winner Megan Fox down to second place, after the biggest and most exciting race for the number one spot in the history of FHM.

Cheryl’s victory is the first for a Brit in three years. Previously, the only British lady to come close was 22-year-old model Keeley Hazell, who this year secured 5th place behind Californian beauty Jessica Alba (3rd) and comeback queen of the poll Britney Spears.

Last year Britney languished at number 31, and following a very mixed year for the singer FHM bosses thought she would drop out completely. However, following a tremendous online campaign by her legions of fans she has made the comeback of her career, claiming 4th place.

Actresses once again seem to have caught the eye of the discerning voter. After wowing the States Anna Friel (9th) is back to her finest form and has secured a place in the coveted Top Ten. Adding to an already amazingly successful 2009, since her stunning performance in film of the year Slumdog Millionaire, Frieda Pinto is a new entry at number ten. Green aliens seem to be a popular too with newcomer, model and Star Trek star, Diora Baird, in at number 33.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s finest Abbey Clancy has scored her highest rating since she first hit the headlines shooting up the table into 12th position from last year’s number 55.

Another notable new entry is at number 17. Frankie Sandford has been labelled the hottest member of The Saturdays. She’s the only member of the band to make it into the Top 100.

Elsewhere in the list gossip column favourites seem to have been replaced by the more intelligent woman. Award-winning newsreader Fiona Bruce and Countdown’s maths genius Rachel Riley both made amazing debuts, beating the likes of Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan.  As did new entry Carla Bruni, who at number 40 in the poll has been hailed the sexiest political figure of the year, triumphing over firm favourites including Eva Longoria (41st) and Pussy Cat Doll Nicole Scherzinger (60th).

Now in its 15th year, FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll is the original and biggest search for the sexiest women in the world. This year nearly ten million votes were cast by FHM readers worldwide.

Chris Bell, FHM Editor comments:

“St George would be proud – a Brit being name the sexiest woman in the world.
And what a woman – no one but Cheryl has the looks, the body, the talent or the no-nonsense Geordie sense of fun. She’s dominated British TV screens, the UK charts and the tabloids for the last year – and now, finally, she’s been recognised as a truly international beauty. Never mind the bandmates: Cheryl is FHM’s No.1.”

He adds: “It’s been a revolutionary year in FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women In The World poll – as old favourites such as Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz are rejected in favour of a new wave of female talent. From Frieda Pinto storming straight in to the number 10 slot, to first appearances from the likes of Christine Bleakley and Zoe Salmon, the tastes of FHM’s readers have never been more sophisticated. Competition for next year’s poll will be white-hot.”

Surprise no-shows in the list include Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez and kids of rock – Peaches and Pixie Geldof and Kimberly Stewart.

FHM's 100 Sexiest supplement, featuring 52 pages of the hottest women in the world, comes free with the June edition of FHM, on sale now.
