...Online reporting empowers organisation to model the carbon impact of future business scenarios and benchmark performance with speed and accuracy...

Monday 10th May 2010 - Greenstone Carbon Management, the global specialist carbon solutions company, has announced today that it is working with Serco, one of the world's leading service companies with 70,000 employees delivering essential services to governments and private clients in over 35 countries.  Its major operations are in Europe, Middle East, Asia Pacific and North America.

Serco has implemented Greenstone Carbon Management’s Acco2unt* carbon accounting software, to provide the company with a single solution to measure, manage and report their carbon emissions globally. This will also ensure that the company is able to fully meet specific UK Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) deadlines.

Tim Davis, Head of Assurance Reporting at Serco said, “Serco’s aim is to minimise our impact on the environment.  To deliver this commitment we must understand and monitor our impact.  The complex nature of Serco’s business operations demanded an easy to use enterprise carbon accounting tool that would help us aggregate, measure and manage carbon emissions – quickly, accurately and cost effectively.  The implementation of Greenstone’s carbon accounting software tool Acco2unt means that we will be able to meet compliance requirements and forecast and manage our liabilities and risks. The software also allows us to model the carbon impact of future business scenarios, benchmark performance across different parts of the organisation and address internal and external reporting requirements with minimum effort. Acco2unt will enable us to automate much of the manual process and to provide carbon reduction services to our clients in the public and private sectors.”

Prior to implementing Acco2unt Serco used internal bespoke systems, but due to the complexity of the organisation and also the arrival of CRC, a more scalable and robust solution was required.

Matthew de Villiers, Chief Executive Officer at Greenstone explains, “It is estimated that UK businesses could face a significant increase in administrative burden in this area to meet new and developing reporting requirements, with international organisations facing a reporting requirement of even greater magnitude and complexity.  Administration costs can increase many fold due to global legislation compliance but these potential costs can be avoided using an enterprise accounting tool.  The implementation of Acco2unt can actually have a reduction impact on current administrative costs and, more importantly, generate additional savings from carbon reduction projects through modeling and monitoring.  Furthermore, we are increasingly seeing that our clients are embedding the tool into their value proposition to provide greener solutions to their clients which is having a direct impact on competitiveness and on the award of contracts.”

Notes to Editor
The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a mandatory emissions trading scheme covering large businesses and public sector organisations.  Inclusion will be a legal requirement for organisations whose half-hourly metered electricity use in the UK is above 6,000 mega watts per year.

See http://www.carbonreductioncommitment.co.uk/ for further information.

* Greenstone’s unique Acco2unt software product suite provides organisations with robust carbon management and accounting solutions.  It enables organisations to measure, manage, plan, store and report emission data, track performance on their carbon footprint at multiple organisational levels and to accurately model carbon footprint reduction strategies. Acco2unt can significantly reduce the burden of auditing and reporting for compliance purposes, for stakeholders and customers. An extensive list of emission sources is included in the software’s calculation covering energy, travel and transport, IT, together with waste and water consumption.
