December 6th, 2006: From today, owners of the latest generation of Wi-Fi-equipped mobile phones can make ultra-low cost calls from any of The Cloud’s 7,500 public Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK.
Truphone is free software that enables Wi-Fi-equipped Nokia mobile phones to make internet-rate phone calls (VoIP calls) over Wi-Fi connections. When the phone is not in Wi-Fi range it reverts to being a normal mobile phone, so people need only one phone.
An agreement between Truphone and The Cloud means a Truphone-enabled mobile phone can now make internet-rate calls whenever it’s in range of one of The Cloud’s hotspots, ensuring its owner is making the cheapest call possible. No passwords or credit card details are required.
The Cloud has hotspots across the UK, including Europe’s largest public access Wi-Fi network in a business district at Canary Wharf, Manchester city centre, and the imminent City of London Wi-Fi zone. The Cloud is constantly adding new hotspots - recently it announced the addition of 232 Little Chef restaurants - and is the clear leader in providing public Wi-Fi access across the UK.
James Tagg, CEO of Truphone, said: “Leave your computer desk behind and relax with your mobile on the coffee shop sofa. Truphone and The Cloud are giving people what they want: low cost calls, on phones they like, from places they want to be.”
Truphone calls from The Cloud’s hotspots are charged at just 3p/minute more than Truphone’s extraordinarily low standard published rates. Example Truphone call charges from a The Cloud hotspot:
to a USA mobile or landline: just 3p/minute
to a Hong Kong mobile or landline: just 3p/minute
to a Polish landline: just 5.3p/minute (Warsaw 3p/minute)
Currently, Truphone is available for Nokia’s E60, E61 and E70 mobiles, with a version for the best-selling Nokia N80 also announced. Owners of a compatible mobile can get Truphone simply by texting the word ‘TRU’ to 07624 000000 or by visiting the Truphone web site (www.truphone.com).
Truphone for other handsets including Windows Mobile devices will follow soon. Owners of other Wi-Fi-equipped mobiles can register to receive an email when Truphone is available for their phone.
Truphone announced its first beta software download for Wi-Fi-enabled Nokia mobile handsets in September 2006. Today’s agreement with The Cloud is Truphone’s first deal with a commercial hotspot operator.
“The Cloud aims to provide hotspot users across Europe with access to the widest possible range of Wi-Fi services at the most possible locations, so we’re delighted to have concluded this agreement,” said Bobby Sarin, COO of The Cloud. “Voice over Wi-Fi is the single most important application yet to emerge because it is the most obviously accessible to the maximum number of people. Wi-Fi-capable mobile phones look likely to proliferate just as cameras on phones did, so demand for voice-ready hotspots looks likely to increase.”

Truphone is the trading name of Software Cellular Network Limited (SCN), a privately-owned UK technology company, founded in 2000 and funded by a mixture of private investment and venture capital. Today, Truphone is pioneering an all-SIP solution that enables mass market mobile phone handsets to make free and very low-cost calls using VoIP over wireless LAN.
Truphone’s founders, investors, advisers and staff are dedicated to the development of mobile internet telephony in the cause of freedom and choice for mobile phone users. The company is also closely involved with the open source community and is developing Truphone in accordance with internationally-recognised open standards. The company has development teams and partners in locations across Finland, Romania, USA and the UK. In December 2006 Truphone was selected as a ‘Technology Pioneer for 2007’ by the World Economic Forum.
Important information about emergency calls: Truphone is not a replacement for an ordinary telephone service and emergency calls cannot be made using Truphone. However Truphone does not prevent emergency calls being made via a handset’s normal cellular service provider.
