  • First location-specific community station on DAB digital radio

Arqiva, the communications infrastructure and media services company, has launched Affinity Radio onto the NOW Digital Cambridge DAB platform. This has made Cambridge-based Affinity Radio the UK’s first location-specific, community-focused radio station launched on DAB.

Arqiva provides Affinity Radio with multiplexing and full transmission services onto its NOW Digital Cambridge multiplex. Arqiva also owns and operates the Digital One platform – one of the UK’s two national DAB multiplexes. The station was launched on FM on 15 March 2011, and officially switched to DAB on 8 April.

Paul Eaton, Director of Radio at Arqiva Broadcast & Media, said: “Community radio is very important and we support these valuable services through our NOW Digital platform. Arqiva already broadcasts community stations in Hampshire and South Wales and we’re delighted to launch Affinity as the first location-specific DAB station. Cambridge has a reputation for being a high-tech city and has above-average DAB usership with nearly 41% of the population having access to a digital radio – so it’s the perfect place to launch this exciting project.”

Brian O'Reilly, Station Manager at Affinity Radio, added: “Cambridge has proved itself ahead of the curve in being ready for Digital Radio and Affinity Radio aims to fulfil its high expectations. Arqiva has provided us with tremendous support in our work to bring this station to air. Their professionalism and experience has greatly eased the technical elements of our launch – allowing us to concentrate on content and delivering Cambridge the DAB service it deserves.”
