Capacity Crowd Gathers as Enterprises Move Away from Proprietary Search Lock-In
Barcelona, Spain – October 17, 2011 – Lucid Imagination, the commercial company for Apache Lucene and Apache Solr search technology today announced record registration numbers for its second Apache Lucene EuroCon EMEA Conference. More than 300 developers, IT professionals and decision makers will convene in Barcelona this week; double the number of delegates from last year’s event and a testament to the industry’s focus on open source search. This interest in an open source path to search applications follows a turbulent 12 months in the proprietary search market and the emergence of Big Data as one of the biggest challenges and opportunities for today’s businesses.
The spike in delegate numbers, increase in partner involvement and breadth of speaker profile at Apache Lucene EuroCon 2011 demonstrates a shift in industry thinking around search. Enterprises are increasingly disillusioned with legacy technologies from costly, proprietary platforms; particularly in light of the M&A activity that has dominated the technology news over the past year, causing many organisations to seek out more stable alternatives from within the open source community.
Attendees will learn how Apache Lucene/Solr open source community innovation is overtaking conventional technologies, unleashing new and innovative search-enabled applications that deliver competitive advantage, scalability, and cost economies. This movement towards open source search is not simply rhetoric, attendees will listen to case studies from high availability enterprises such as Etsy and EMC; learning how to tackle the challenge of Big Data, without the burden of proprietary search implementations.
The increased importance of search within the entire IT ecosystem becomes clear when looking at the agenda for EuroCon. Keynote speeches from Twitter, Nokia and Hortonworks will focus on how Big Data touches the lives of all businesses, technology and consumers. Effective enterprise applications are at the centre of effective data management, analytics and intelligence. Delegates at EuroCon will learn how to design and build search applications, without the constraints of proprietary alternatives.
“During the 18 months since our last EuroCon, open source search has moved from the developer’s desk to the CIO’s,” said Grant Ingersoll, Chief Scientist at Lucid Imagination. “Search is intrinsic to a successful strategy of dealing with Big Data and the flux in the proprietary search market has left many reconsidering the way they approach search. The appetite across Europe for a forum to meet, learn and share best practice has ensured the success for Apache Lucene EuroCon 2011.”
As delegates from every corner of Europe descend on Barcelona on Wednesday, media are invited to learn more about EuroCon at http://2011.lucene-eurocon.org and follow the event at #eurocon.
